C - Carbon - periodic table of the elements

Although the name carbon comes from Roman times, the non-metallic element has been known, as charcoal, coal, diamonds and soot, since the dawn of mankind. More known compounds contain carbon than all the other elements combined. Except for carbonates which were discovered in minerals, compounds that contain carbon are called organic compounds. Carbon dioxide and several carbonates are used in fundamental chemistry as well as carbon containing alcohols and oils.
